Characteristics of some igneous extrusive and hypabyssal features in seismic data

Examples of flood basalts and dike intrusions from four localities on the British continental shelf are illustrated in seismic data. Synform features flanked by antiforms in the flood-basalt areas are interpreted as fissure vents seen in cross section, and geologic models are considered that might explain seismic events indicating subsidence and other effects associated with the observed features. Seismic phenomena related to dikes in the Manx-Furness Basin and the North Sea are discussed, and possible causes of apparent bilateral updrag in the country rocks adjacent to these intrusions are suggested.
