Volcanic rocks approximately 1.1 Ga on Michipicoten Island, Lake Superior, Canada, contain abundant glassy material. Observations from X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, and optical and transmission electron microscopy are consistent with the material being glass. The preservation of natural glassy materials for tens of millions of years must be of interest to the nuclear waste industry.
