Evidence for fluoride melts in Earth's mantle formed by liquid immiscibility

Stephan Klemme*,1

1 Mineralogisches Institut, Universität Heidelberg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 236, 69120 Heidelberg, Germany

Hitherto unknown fluoride melts were found in metasomatized mantle xenoliths from New Zealand. These fluoride melts were only preserved in rock fragments that were carefully polished using nonhydrous polishing liquids. The fluoride melts were derived by liquid immiscibility from a precursor alkali silicate melt, and their geochemical signature suggests an origin within a subduction-zone setting.

Key Words: mantle xenoliths • subduction • fluoride melt • mantle metasomatism • Kakanui
