Cover: Inner Gorge of the Grand Canyon near Hermit Rapids, RM 95 on the Colorado River. “Colorado” means red in Spanish; this photo from just before the 2008 Havasu floods shows the river in its “true color.” Karlstrom et al. propose that the carving of the inner gorge depicted here has taken place in the past ~1.5 m.y., emphasizing that the Grand Canyon is a geologically young canyon carved into very old rocks. See “Model for tectonically driven incision of the younger than 6 Ma Grand Canyon,” by Karlstrom et al., p. 835-838.
